Perennial herb 15-36" tall with hairy, 4-angled, purplish stems. Leaves opposite, simple, ovate 2-6" long and 1/2 as wide, petioled, hairy serrate. Flowers are small, pale purple, pink or white about 0.25" long, upper lip straight and notched, lower lip longer and 3-lobed. Bloom time June-August. Found in rich, mesic woods. The flowers open 2 at a time, traveling up the stem.
